I got my first pair of glasses when I was in 5th grade. They had pink frames and I was only supposed to wear them when I read. Over time, my eyes became increasingly more dependent on them and eventually I had to get new glasses that of which I was required to wear all the time.
By high school, I was just about "blind as a bat" without them and it took me until well into my sophomore year to convince my parents that I could handle wearing contacts. I alternated between contacts and glasses for years until finally, a couple of years after I graduated from college, I submitted to wearing glasses almost exclusively. It was that time when I made the definitive move to pick ones that were as fashion-forward as possible versus ones that were as unnoticeable as possible. With my impeccable taste and innate ability to always pick the most expensive thing that might exist of anything, I picked out Brooks Brothers frames and wore them until they were so "broke as a joke" that I was rigging them to stay together with beading wire. I was so attached to them - what can I say? And when it was time for me to get a new pair, I picked out some shiny pinky frames from the Christy Brinkley line at Wal-mart. They were sort of silly and a little obnoxious but so much fun I couldn't not like them. And as time has passed, I feel like they've become so much a part of me that I dread the day when it's time for me to trade them in for a new style.
Currently, one of the nose pads is missing from my beloved pinky glasses and this is the third time this has happened. I should probably just go and get them fixed because it only takes not even 10 minutes but life has been so busy that I've just put it off. At this rate, I'm sure their time will be spent soon enough.
Tonight as I played with Baby A, we were all being silly and in a moment of extreme silliness, I plunked them down on her face. She was so tickled with wearing them that she started grinning and giggling immediately and didn't even pull them off! I pulled them off for her and then when I put them back on her, she started laughing so hard that she dropped her face down into her yellow blanket and could barely sit herself upright for me to try them back on her.
Perhaps I'm biased but I think she looks great in glasses!!! For her benefit though, I hope she inherits D's great vision so she doesn't have to deal with being a four-eyes all her life who gets so attached to her glasses that she rigs them up with wire and wears them without proper nose pads.
